Mike Brown has brought Coach Ettore Messina on board.
Italian Coach Ettore Messina has agreed to join Mike Brown’s coaching staff with the LA Lakers a source familiar with the negotiations said.
Messina will be listed as an assistant coach but will be behind the bench, not on it, and will serve in more of a consulting capacity, sources said. Messina will help Brown in a similar capacity that Tex Winter served former Lakers Coach Phil Jackson.
Brown developed a relationship with Messina when he was head coach of the Cavaliers and Messina was the head coach of CSKA Moscow. Brown routinely flew to Italy, where Messina held CSKA’s training camps, to pick up new ideas to use with the Cavs. It would seem Messina will help Brown in a similar capacity that Tex Winter served former Laker Coach Phil Jackson.
Another candidate which Brown is pursuing is former Pistons head coach John Kuester. Kuester was on Brown’s staff in Cleveland as an assistant from 2007 to 2009. Kuester was named head coach of the Pistons in 2009 and was just recently let go from Detroit. Keep an eye out as it was reported Brown wants Kuester on his staff, as well.
